I’ve gotten to know the two women dressed in black. Taylor and Tara worked at the Tito’s Vodka sampling station, which I visited a few times over my two-day East Austin Studio Tour. It was early evening on the second day, and the event was wrapping up.
It was getting dark and with the lights on, it was perfect for my type of lower-light portraiture. I was shooting Taylor and Tara when another friend joined in. Then two more. Using a 50mm equivalent lens, I just kept zooming with my feet, stepping further back, with each new member.
I’m pleasantly surprised how well this turned out, given that I shot this in low-light with a slow shutter speed. I told everyone to hold steady and I shot a few quick frames. I’ve used 1/15 of a second on my Drink and Click portraits, with one person. But, never with five. Sometimes luck and image stabilization can save the day. Or the portrait.
