It’s bike to work day in Austin today. The Dutch must find that concept entirely baffling. After being in the Netherlands for the last week and seeing the astonishing amount of bike usage, it’s hard to overstate how integral cycling is in that country. For them the concept of just a single day devoted to biking is probably laughable.
I’m, unfortunately, like the typical American, driving to work in my suburban oriented lifestyle.
It occurred to me that the Dutch have created a virtuous cycle. Extensive biking has reduced car usage, reduced pollution and increased health. You don’t see as many overweight people there. And the number of cars on the road, remarkably few.

I love it. When I was last in Holland (1967) the streets were filled with bikes at rush hour. There would have been no room for any cars. Is it still like that?
From what I saw, they now have dedicated lanes for cars, bikes and people. Things seem to flow very smoothly.
Hi I’m from Holland, not a bike fan, but love reading your blog! Especially when it is about the x100s. Did you do something special in the Netherlands? Keep up the good work!
Hi Pascal, I worked in Breda for a week. My first time in Holland, loved it.
