It was a chilly evening in the 50s and all of the customers retreated indoors. Just the day before, a comfortable night in the 70s had this sidewalk cafe hopping with patrons. But a sudden cold front with sustained gusts and a sprinkle of rain, changed everything.
I sort of like the warm glow and the absence of people. It looks both inviting and lonely at the same time. These scenes attract me. The city is where I’ve lived and grew up so these observations are part of my DNA. Like a landscape photographer who knows the approaching weather or behaviors of wildlife. I feel comfortable in these big cities, while the great outdoors will baffle my urban sensitivities.
This cafe is on Canal Street, several blocks away from the riverfront and Casino, and surrounded by street life. Many of the stores in the area are modest but the liveliness of the area makes up for lack of glitz.
