We start our Louvre art tour with this impressive statue, the Great Sphinx of Tanis. My wife is fascinated with Egypt and Egyptian art, and the Louvre has an entire wing dedicated to it. Unfortunately, we took a wrong turn somewhere. All of a sudden, we were surrounded by Greek statues.
We didn’t double back to the Egyptian art and soldiered on. I let my wife do the navigating. I just tagged along, taking pictures of worthwhile scenes.
I quickly perused the Louvre’s website before this post, and it appears that this Sphinx is the most impressive Egyptian piece in their collection. And but impressive, I just mean big and photo-worthy. Egyptologists might know of more significant artifacts in their collection.
Since you can’t realistically see but a fraction of the Louvre in one afternoon, I’m okay with hitting the visual highlights. My wife didn’t seem especially perturbed that we didn’t tour the Egyptian section either — which is all that matters.
