The Opulent and Playful Interior of The Cosmopolitan

Interior, The Cosmopolitan – Las Vegas, Nevada

I’ve talked about and featured exterior pictures (here and here) of The Cosmopolitan from the night photo walk the day before. However, the interior is even more dramatic.

Casinos are designed to hide time from customers, so no clocks and windows give hits of the time of day. More importantly for photography, they maintain their moody glow 24 hours a day. While it might be high noon and super bright outside, The Cosmopolitan’s interior remained opulent and playful. It’s a design that I like.

The Cosmopolitan, like the Aria next door, has a contemporary aesthetic. However, it seems more old-school Vegas meets modern design than the super-modern Aria. I think The Cosmo will age better.

I walked in at the ground floor from Las Vegas Blvd and looked up to snap the first picture. Go up the escalator, and you glide past a floating lounge surrounded by purple LED-lit crystal beads. It’s a comparably simple and effective design. I don’t know if they ever change the colors — it’s been purple every time I’ve seen it.

The next level up is a fantastic food hall, which I’ll discuss tomorrow. You can see the floating lounge and the first-floor gaming area through the atrium.

Nearly two years ago, I posted this picture of the same area shot with the Fujifilm GFX 50S II. While it looks super-saturated, the post-processing saturation wasn’t much higher than the photos in this post. The medium format Fuji sensor has a richness of color beyond the APS-C Fuji cameras.
