Hoover Dam

Hoover Dam - Arizona

Hoover Dam – Arizona

Here’s our first real stop on our day tour. About 30 miles east of the Las Vegas Strip stands Hoover Dam, one of the modern engineering marvels.

The Hoover Dam started in 1930 and was dedicated in 1935, and hydroelectric generators went online in 1937. At its peak, the construction employed over 5,000 people, and there were 112 deaths associated with the dam’s construction.

I took this picture from an overlook in Arizona, looking at the reservoir side of the dam. A severe drought significantly lowered water levels. A full lake would take the water levels close to the walkway level between the intake towers.
