Moulin Rouge – Paris, France

Moulin Rouge is the famous Paris Cabaret, where dancing women wear revealing outfits. It would’ve been interesting to go, but we didn’t. Part of it was due to our available time, and the other was my hesitance to go to this neighborhood at night. However, it was only a five-minute walk from the Pink Mamma, where we had our lunch.

While the show itself would be entertaining — I’m sure — I wanted to capture this building at night with its extensive red neon. I’ve often said how much I love shooting neon. During blue hour would be ideal. Instead, I settled for daylight pictures, which are not nearly as compelling.

The place is famous enough that there were many tourists. Pull back slightly from my image above, and you can see the people around me also taking pictures. That’s the current reality of popular places. What looks like a clean, mostly people-less image is taken around a group of others doing the same. I hear it’s really bad for noteworthy landscape locations, too. You expect crowds in the city, but in the middle of nature, a crowd of photographs seems unsettling.
