As I wind down my coverage of Opéra Garnier, we turn to the interior balconies facing into the central atrium. I have four versions here taken from different angles and locations.
I shot the two pictures in portrait orientation at a 39mm equivalent. They are meant to capture details with a bit of compression. The two photos in landscape orientation are, at my widest, a 24mm equivalent. Yes, they also show details, but in context to the rest of the building.
Using varying focal lengths tells different stories, something I need to remember. I should also try a longer telephoto focal length to pick out extreme details that are not easily seen by the eye. Perhaps shooting a 120mm equivalent will reveal delicate patterns within the intricate carvings.
I tend to think wide-angle; that’s how I started my photography. Though I’ve improved lately, I still default to a wide view.
