We are looking north from the rooftop deck of Printemps on Haussmann, an upscale department store in Paris. In the previous posts, I covered the views south and southwest. Today, we have the final view in this mini-series.
I used my maximum telephoto setting on the one lens I brought to Paris, a 120mm equivalent. The telephoto compression reduces the distance from near to far. Thus, the Sacre Coeur at Montmartre looks relatively close. Google Maps reveals it’s 1.3 miles away, which doesn’t sound that far, and walkable in 30 minutes. That’s a lot closer than I thought. Still, if you saw this with your naked eye, the historic church would look a lot farther away.
As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, buildings under renovation seem to be wrapped with a picture of the underlying facade and often a big advertisement. The Parada perfume ad looms large and overshadows the Sacre Coeur. That’s an illusion, of course, since that wrapped tower is much closer than the church. Still, it’s a fun juxtaposition.
