I’m sure I’m in the minority when I say I wasn’t too enamored with the Palace of Versailles. Yes, it has lovely — if not a bit repetitive — architecture, and the scale of the complex is truly impressive. Inside, however, most of the rooms are similarly decorated with a change of wallpaper and different artwork — it doesn’t have much architectural variety. The Royal Chapel, admittedly, is a lovely space.
The Palace is essentially a large art museum with some royal furnishings. As I’ve mentioned a few times on the blog, I’m generally not very interested in art museums; I’m attracted instead to the architecture that holds the art. The Louvre is an art museum, of course, but with more varied architecture.
Sometime in the middle of the self-guided Versailles tour, I got bored and started making images to capture the flow of tourists. A motion blur of ornate rooms and the rush of people felt like the answer, as seen in several photographs I created.
