Kapiolani Boulevard Tree – Honolulu, Hawaii

As we march through this mini-series, the trees have grown in scale and impressiveness. We’ve moved out of Waikiki and moved west, where I found this spectacular specimen on Kapiolani Boulevard and Kaheka Street. We are a block north of the giant Ala Moana Shopping Mall.

I’m pretty sure this is a Monkey Pod Tree, which can spread wide and grow remarkably tall. They are known for lovely canopies with gorgeous branches. There’s a chance the much more modest tree I featured yesterday is also a Monkey Pod, which has pink flowers. Yesterday’s tree is so small that I wouldn’t have considered it a Monkey Pod; however, the large trees must start somewhere.

We have another ring of architecture in the periphery, which is in the proper scale with the tree. A small tree like yesterday’s would look ridiculously small in comparison. Today’s tree, however, properly dominates the surrounding buildings.
