A-Ma’s Gua Bao is one of my favorite booths at the Kaka’ako Farmers Market. Unlike the noodle booth I talked about a couple of days ago, which is no longer at the market, A-Ma’s is still there. I ate one of their tasty baos in February, just a few months ago.
Bao is a steamed bun or bread-like dumpling filled with sweet or savory fillings. It is of Chinese origin. This booth mentions it is Taiwanese Cuisine, and after Googling the difference, I discovered that the Taiwanese Gua Bao version has an open-style bun. The booth offers several fillings, and my favorite is pork belly.
I shot this picture in 2022, but my 2025 visit revealed the same staff, including the older gentleman in the middle. He was still taking orders while the younger staff fulfilled them. It’s nice to see the same business doing well over the years.
