Grounds of the Royal Hawaiian – Honolulu, Hawaii

Contrasting with the modern towers of the Hilton Hawaiian Village, we have the very pink Royal Hawaiian, one of the oldest hotels in Waikiki. The Royal Hawaiian opened its doors in 1927 and is the second oldest to the Moana Surfrider, which opened in 1901. I’ve featured this historic structure many times on the blog.

In keeping with the fisheye series, we have a wide and distorted view of the pink hotel shot from the property’s rear grounds. The landscaping is simple but effective, anchored by a giant Monkey Pod tree.

Oddly, my favorite part of this image is the dramatic shadows cast by the palm trees, which create a compelling foreground element. Without this, the image would be dull despite the colorful contrast between the hotel and the grass.
