Iolani Palace Grounds – Honolulu, Hawaii

A quick 6-minute walk southeast gets you from the downtown skyscrapers to Iolani Palace, the former residence of the Hawaiian Monarchy. Hawaii is the only state in the Union to have had a king and queen.

The palace is in the center of a sizable urban park surrounded by government buildings.

I’m using a fisheye lens like I’ve done for all photos in this series, although the distortion is relatively controlled in this photo. Because the fisheye is an ultra-wide lens, we also get wide-angle distortion, which increases the space between near and far. Closer objects like the tree appear larger, and the palace is pushed back and appears smaller. Thus, the building looks almost toy-like, appearing to fit underneath the tree.
