On the same block, three stores south of yesterday’s Citizens National Bank, we have the only remaining theater downtown. I took this photograph in 2022, and the Howard Theater appears to be in disrepair. The marquee is deteriorating, and there are no movies listed. Back in 2019, I made this post which includes an Art-ish version. The marquee featured Spiderman and the Lion King. I guess the pandemic hasn’t been kind to the Howard Theater.
Photographically, I shot the streetscape from an angle rather than head-on, as I usually do. You lose the sign detail when you shoot the image directly from the front, an important consideration and a key element of the building.
I used Google Street View to take a look at the area, and the Howard had movie posters in its display windows. Although I have no idea when the Street View photograph was taken. Sadly, the status indicated “Temporarily Closed.” The Howard Theater website indicates they are raising money to reopen.
