So why did my mom and I go to the Raffles Hotel? To get drinks at a bar. Not just any drink and not any ordinary bar. We got Singapore Slings at the place where they were invented, the Long Bar at the Raffles Hotel.
Created by bartender Ngiam Tong Boon around 1915, this cocktail was crafted to resemble fruit juice, making it socially acceptable for women to enjoy a drink discreetly. The Long Bar version is complex with the following ingredients according to ChatGPT: Gin, Cherry Heering, Cointreau, Benedictine, Fresh pineapple juice, Lime juice, Grenadine, and Angostura bitters.
Given that this is a tourist-heavy destination and a fancy, famous place, the drinks were expensive. I forget the exact price we paid, but looking it up, each drink runs around $30 US. The most I’ve paid for a cocktail. However, it was fun and my mom thoroughly enjoyed it.
