Pedicab Driver – Havana, Cuba

Does this vehicle qualify as a pedicab? Or is it just a tricycle? Unlike the others I’ve seen, which feature a covered roof and a roomy back seat, this one is open top and carries goods, not people. It’s like the human-powered equivalent of a pickup truck.

Regardless of his vehicle, I like the portrait primarily for the contrast of the driver’s red shirt to the blue/green background. It’s a busy background, and a busy composition overall. But because of the shallow depth of field, the background is softened enough. Imagine if the entire frame were in focus, as shot with a smartphone.

That’s where a full-frame camera works well. Subject separation creates a more 3D appearance. Even though I’m using a not-too-fast f/3.2 aperture, at 70mm, the subject leaps forward pleasingly.
