The delightful Battery Park City Esplanade runs north from Battery Park along the west side of lower Manhattan. I only experienced part of it near Brookfield Place, next to the North Cove Yacht Harbor and the Hudson River, as you can see in the photo.
Although located near numerous commercial skyscrapers, Battery Park City is primarily a residential sector with over 1/3 reserved for parkland. It appears to be a surprisingly livable neighborhood close to the financial district. The entire area was built atop reclaimed land, extending Manhattan Island further into the Hudson.
The neighborhood is thriving, recovering fully after suffering through the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. Not surprising. Given that it’s been over twenty years since that tragic day.
