One of the unique aspects of San Antonio’s downtown core is its multiple-level design. At the bottom is River Walk, with all the businesses that cater to the tourists. Go up a flight of stairs to reach the street level with sidewalks and cars. As part of my walk downtown, dictated somewhat by the guidance via smartphone maps, I experienced the River Walk and the street.
Near the River Walk, on the Main Plaza, is this gem of a structure. The Bexar County Courthouse, designed by J. Riely Gordon, was completed in 1896. The courthouse serves as the county seat for San Antonio.
Compared with Austin, the larger and older San Antonio sports a more impressive courthouse. Austin’s is a more modest structure, built in 1931.
