A couple of days ago, I talked about shooting street photography “from the hip” with the Fujifilm 16mm f2.8 lens — that gives a 24mm equivalent framing. To — hopefully — capture a natural expression, I didn’t bring the camera to my face. Instead, I shot discretely from the body level.
A 24mm equivalent is relatively wide, so I must get closer before pressing the shutter. I especially like the angle and expression of the closest woman on the left. The slight wide-angle distortion produces the effect of being in the middle of the action. There’s also an even and balanced distribution of people that draws you into the frame.
You might not recognize this, but this is East 6th Street, where I frequently shoot evening urban landscapes. I rarely visit during the daytime because it’s usually dull architecturally. But, of course, street photography is a different story and a lot easier when there’s ample light.
