The pull of anticipation, parade or smartphone updates, which is stronger? Shot on Congress Avenue before the 2016 ROT Rally Parade in Austin, Texas.
Top photo at 70mm equivalent, the bottom at 200mm. It’s the kind of photo I didn’t take when I only used a 35mm prime. My Photo Sketchbook enabled me to shoot this from across a very wide street.
I’ve always liked the towering and organically sculptural Live Oak trees next to the Harry Ransom Center on the University of Texas campus. Their natural forms soften and contrast nicely against the smooth modern architecture. This modern museum is not as austere as earlier modernist works but a little nature never hurts to add a bit of humanity.
All four photographs shot with my Photo Sketchbook at a 28mm equivalent.
I’ve been to the Harry Ransom Center on the University of Texas campus numerous times. I’m always drawn to the light filled rooms that flank the entrance. The etched glass, the gridded geometry and the Live Oaks beyond make a compelling photograph, especially in black and white.
A dark hallway beckons with the promise of light and a hint of stairs. Enter the room and a graphic staircase forms the centerpiece and the etched glass, the textured backdrop.
Shot with my Photo Sketchbook at 24mm – 28mm equivalent with built-in black and white JPEG.
In Austin, the University of Texas Tower is a fixture and the iconic centerpiece of the campus. Though I’ve shot it a number of times, I’ve never scrutinized its details. The temple like top and golden clock make an interesting subject and an obvious choice to test the extreme zooming capabilities of my Photo Sketchbook.
The first photo starts at a 200mm equivalent. Subsequent photos are at 300mm, 400mm, 500mm, 600mm and 720mm. At ISO 80, the images are good, though the details gets softer with the increased zoom. No doubt a weakness of a 30x zoom. Shot in JPEG and post processed to taste.
Sometimes a single image captures an entire event — The SXSW Traffic Jam.
A hipster drives a pedicab filled with out-of-towners. Two pedicabs pass, blocking the road for a fairy riding a unicorn. The police is there to keep the peace while bystanders snap smartphone pics. Nearly hidden in the back, a man in a purple body suit hands out promotions.
Quiz: How many smart phones in this photograph?
