Arches of the Promenade Plantée – Paris, France

I’ve talked about Paris’s beautiful, elevated linear park for the last few days. The park looks bucolic, and the view from it, even the brick apartments, look spectacular. For my last post from the Promenade Plantée, I wanted to feature how lovely the structure looks within the neighborhood.

One wouldn’t know there is a park above the brick arched structure to the right. It looks like a series of stores and cafes along the street. However, look closely; you will notice trees growing where the roof should be — urban design at its best — a harmonious blend of classic architecture and nature.

I’ve compared this park to the High Line in New York City — the Paris park came first. This picture shows the High Line’s structure above the street — it has all the charm of an elevated subway line. The metal structure might complement the industrial aesthetic of the neighborhood. But let’s not kid ourselves. It looks somewhat gritty and ugly compared to the elegance of the Promenade Plantée.
