Performance at the Opéra Garnier – Paris, France

Riding the Paris Metro Line 8 and getting off at Opéra station, we were rewarded with a breathtaking site. The Palais Garnier, also known as Opéra Garnier, is a 1,979-seat opera house. It was built for the Paris Opera from 1861 to 1875.

We toured the grand opera house later in the trip, though we didn’t attend a performance. I did, however, capture this street performance with this magnificent backdrop.

If you think the exterior is over-the-top, you haven’t seen anything yet. The interior is even more remarkable and my favorite architectural experience in Paris. I’ll feature photos from it in a future blog post.

  1. Hi Andy,
I put this post on a small NYC photography group. Then after seeing your post it occurred to me you might also find it interesting.

I was up this evening looking through channels and ran across a wonderful PBS documentary about photographer Fred Stein. It’s called:

Out of Exile: The Photographs of Fred Stein

It’s about a Jewish man and his wife caught up in Nazi Germany, deprived of practicing law, trying to stay alive, and the photographs he took as he learned a skill to make some money. His skills grew as he finally escaped with his wife to France and then to New York, photographing people, doing what we now think of as ‘Street Photography’ and later portraits including some well-known people.

It was very well done. His work has been in exhibits around the world. If you’re interested in early B&W photographers, you will love this.

If you do find it on TV, let me know what you think!

Here’s to the continued wonderful and fascinating practice of street photography!
