Atrium Geometry

Luxor Atrium - Las Vegas, Nevada

Luxor Atrium – Las Vegas, Nevada

After checking into the Luxor and searching longer than expected for the elevator, I finally reached my floor. I forget my exact floor, but it was somewhere around the 16th, about halfway up this 30-story structure. You get a better sense of the pyramid’s interior from these three pictures.

The elevators are at the corners and rise diagonally up the building. They feel slightly different from a standard elevator but less than you imagine. Many compromises were made to conform to this pyramid design, and the floor layout seems slightly off. The distance from the elevator to the room seemed longer than usual, and the height of the ceiling seemed low. Unlike most hotels where a hallway leads to rooms on either side, all rooms are entered from the atrium side.

Also, the wall along the corridor separating you from a horrific plunge seems lower than expected. One of my friends experienced vertigo while walking down the hallway. I would be concerned with Vegas revelers, under the influence, horsing around these hallways. It didn’t seem very hard to “accidentally” fall overboard. I felt more comfortable walking nearer to the rooms away from the atrium.

As a hotel guest, I got to shoot the view from my floor. The card key restricts you to your floor for added security, and it was a hassle to visit my other friends on different floors.

The obelisk and faux buildings simulated a mini city in the atrium below. Interspersed were stores and venues for paid attractions. The casino and slots were located a floor below.

Despite deemphasizing the Egyptian theme, many remained, such as this temple-like structure. However, this architecture seemed more Mayan than Egyptian. I’m no expert, and though I’ve visited Mayan pyramids, I have yet to go to Egypt. I know the Luxor is a poor substitute, but it will have to do for now.
