Diminished Luster of Daytime Vegas

Planet Hollywood - Las Vegas, Nevada

Planet Hollywood – Las Vegas, Nevada

It’s always eye-opening to compare a place during the daytime and night. I started my Las Vegas series by taking a night photo walk along the Strip. The light, neon, and shadows add sparkle and mystery to Sin City. During the daytime, not as much.

Some places, like City Center, featured a few days ago, look great during the day. The dynamic architecture and colorful, varied facades maintain visual interest even during the midday. For generic architecture like Planet Hollywood, things don’t look as rosy. Plaster ads onto mismatched facades, and you create visual clutter. I don’t have a nighttime comparison. I walked in front of the complex the night before documenting details.

In all fairness, this bland urban characteristic is not exclusive to Las Vegas. Many modern cities are similar with their boxy International-style architecture. Ornate facades of the past add details during the day, but minimalist steel and glass aren’t as interesting unless they break out of their simple rectangular shape.
