Seven Magic Mountains – Las Vegas, Nevada

On day four, our high school group got up way too early for a day-long excursion out of the Las Vegas Strip. Our first stop was this rather odd art installation twenty miles south of the Luxor hotel.

Swiss Artist Ugo Rondinone completed the installation in 2016. The sculpture is precisely as it appears, painted stacked rocks ranging in height from thirty to thirty-five feet.

I tried to bunch the structures together in the first composition, doing my best to minimize people. All seven rock towers are in the frame, though one is almost completely hidden.

In this second landscape framing, you can clearly see all seven rock towers and a smattering of people. I prefer the first framing since it concentrates the artistic effect into a narrow corridor.

I reserve my judgment on the artwork other than to say the colors really pop against the barren brown landscape. I suppose that’s the point.
