In yesterday’s downtown photo essay of Chur, Switzerland, I featured several modern and traditional buildings. However, none were as remarkable as this architecturally pure structure I discovered during my exploration.
Completed in 2016, this extension of the Bündner Kunstmuseum was designed by Barcelona-based Estudio Barozzi/Veiga. The original 1875 museum building is traditional, so this modern extension creates a dramatic contrast.
This photograph came out better than expected. When I took the image, I didn’t imagine it in this final form. I snapped a few pictures since it looked dramatically different from the surrounding structures. After perspective correcting, as I often now do, I realized its purity of form would create a dramatic image especially in monochrome. I selected the version with the woman walking in front to add that street photography touch, creating an unusual combination of an abstract, architectural street photograph.

Now that is what Black & White is all about. Marvelous!
I’ve enjoyed all the Switzerland photos. They show your photographic eye and skills at their best. Yes, the content contributed a large measure to my reaction, but the impact would have been less…maybe negligible…without your handling of it.
Thank you very much, Michael! I’m really happy with the way this came out, which doesn’t happen often. Perhaps I should actively try to make images like this instead of relying on luck. More to come from Switzerland.
