Interior, Glacier Express – Switzerland

The only reason we went to Chur was to ride the Glacier Express — this train with a glass roof affords commanding views of the stunning Swiss countryside. However, as we saw from the last two weeks, my photo walk through Chur was an unexpected delight. The Glacier Express runs from St. Moritz to Zermatt, about 180 miles along the south of Switzerland through the mountains. The entire trip takes 8 hours.

My sister came up with the idea of going from Chur to Zermatt instead, cutting the ride by two hours. Plus, the train from Zurich to St. Moritz would take two more hours than going to Chur. Thus, this slightly shortened option saved us a total of four hours. Not that we were in a rush. The entire purpose of the Glacier Express is to sit back and enjoy the view at a leisurely average speed of 24 miles per hour.

We opted for the first-class cabin, the middle option between the second and excellence classes. It offered roomier seats and food service without being extravagant.
