I confess that I don’t know much about French food. When I think of Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, and Thai food, I can name specific dishes. But not French. I know a croissant is French, but apparently, the origin of French Fries is disputed. Some think it came from Belgium.
I selected a croque madame for dinner, seen here with a side of Belgium fries. It tasted great, was light enough for a late-evening dinner, and sounded sufficiently French.
What is a croque madame? Basically, it’s a fancy ham and cheese sandwich with an egg on top. Subtract the egg, and you have a croque monsieur, which is known in America as a Monte Cristo sandwich. Of course, I didn’t know any of this when I ordered. I just learned this via some background research before the blog post. I aim to educate and entertain.
