Experiments with Metro Motion Blur

Metro Motion Blur – Paris, France

I am interested in trains and subways, so I always take the opportunity to photograph them. My natural inclination is street photography and creating motion blurs. With a capable in-lens stabilization system in the Fujifilm 16-80mm, I experimented with blurring trains. These pictures are at 1/6 and 1/8 of a second.

The most apparent shot is of the metro arriving at the station. The motion blur stands out with everything tack sharp other than the train.

Of course, I can also capture the blur of a train already in the station before it comes to a complete stop.

While this looks like the same train and station as in the first photo, it isn’t. It’s the same train line, but a different train at a different station — Villiers Station in the first and third photos and Blanche Station in the second picture.

With motion on the train and the pedestrians, you have a more complex image that lacks the grounding effect of the surrounding environment. It becomes more abstract. However, the stable train platform adds one stabilizing visual element.
