Lunch at the Palace

Quiche, Angelina - Versailles, France

Quiche, Angelina – Versailles, France

My wife and I had lunch at the Palace of Versailles, which sounded good after a long day of sightseeing. We waited for about 30 minutes to get seated at Angelina, a famous Paris-based tea house. They are known for their sweets but also serve savory dishes. I didn’t know much about the place, but my wife did. I think it was part of her grand plan to eat there. I didn’t care; I just followed along happily, shooting photographs.

I picked quiche, which sounded sufficiently French and something I don’t eat here in the U.S. other than the miniature bite-sized variety served as hors d’oeuvres that you can get at Costco — yes, my culinary tastes, as you can see, are very sophisticated. Perhaps I had an aversion to quiche growing up as a teenager in the early 80s when the book “Real Men Don’t Eat Quiche” was published. I had never read the book, but I remembered the title. Of course, as a teenager, I was certainly serious about being a real man. Now, well into middle age, I no longer care.

The Quiche Lorraine was fantastic, and I’m glad I had it. The Mont-Blanc is Angelina’s signature sweet dish; my wife and I shared one. I found it entirely too large and too sweet.

The actual restaurant wasn’t glamorous but looked sufficiently historic and vaguely palace-like if you are part of the hoi palloi. I’m sure the royals had more opulent dining options.
