The Primary Garden

Gardens, Palace of Versailles – Versailles, France

Wrapping up the garden coverage at the Palace of Versailles, we have the money shot looking west. The garden is so extensive there are many subsections like the area I called the side garden (my terminology) and the maze-like tall hedges I’ve shown you in the last couple of days.

The gardens mirror the palace in philosophy, where bigger is better. The size impresses. However, close-ups show that they lack detail. This is the opposite philosophy of Japanese gardens, for example, which aren’t as large but have rich detail.

As I discussed yesterday, I feel a certain level of frustration trying to document the gardens — like the architecture — since it’s hard to capture their scale. I used a slight compression in today’s photo to reduce the space between the primary visual elements. The actual view is even more vast.
