Metro with Shadow, Shine, and Blur

Modern Metro Station - Paris, France

Modern Metro Station – Paris, France

I’ve featured several pictures from the Paris Metro during this very long series. As I wind down the coverage, I promise this is the last metro photograph from my 2022 trip, a monochrome, which is the most moody and visually complex of all my metro photographs.

What makes this image complex? Unlike the other stations, this one is modern, with glass walls that only open when a train arrives. Zooming in, you see faces in the train and also reflected off the glass. The shadows and motion blur add mystery, and the shine off the floor adds a dynamic pop.

This image also vaguely reminds me of the work of Daido Moriyama, a famous Japanese photographer famous for contrasty black and whites in urban environments. I talk about him and his influence on this blog post.
