Fresh vs. Processed

H Mart Observations – Austin, Texas

In my observations at H Mart and test of the Leica D-Lux 8, we moved from yesterday’s vegetables to fish. I really like the sharp and natural color rendering of the fish, especially the pinkish one in the middle. I did my usual post-processing, such as exposure and shadow tweaking and increased saturation. However, I didn’t have to touch the white balance, which I find the hardest to set appropriately.

The colors out of the camera seem very satisfactory, and I make fewer adjustments on these files than on the images from the Sonys.

Best of all, the camera is a smallish compact that doesn’t call attention to itself. Thus, shooting pictures in a supermarket doesn’t seem strange.

I threw in this second picture, not for its fantastic content or color, but as a joke. I found the “Fish Ball Annual Ball” sign amusing because it promoted essentially processed fish. It made for an interesting juxtaposition of fresh vs. processed.

My general rule for food is that I don’t like to see the animal my meat comes from. Therefore, while I like the taste of fish, I prefer not to see the animal itself. That’s why sushi works for me, as do fish balls.
