Knox Kronenberg Talk, Precision Camera – Austin, Texas

A week after I photographed the owner’s dog, which I posted yesterday, I attended the free photography lecture I signed up for at Precision Camera. Knox Kronenberg gave an interactive and casual talk.

Precision Camera has hosted, and I have attended many photography lectures. Most are on standard topics—with some variation—usually sponsored by a camera or lens company. As I get more experienced and opinionated with my photography, I attend fewer of those sessions. However, I most enjoy the lectures presented by real, full-time, dedicated photographers. They are more into image creation than gear.

That was the case with Knox Kronenberg, a photographer specializing in epic large-scale prints of Texas and Western themes. Some combine the Old West and new technology. Other pictures are playful, like a longhorn in the bar playing pool or poker with cowboys. Most dramatically, he makes and sells giant prints. Knox wowed the audience with two of his framed artwork.

Most of the talk revolved around the concepts and creativity involved in image creation. Knox’s work requires many coordinated actors and elaborate staging, giving his productions movie-like characteristics. He didn’t talk much about gear, which is good. However, Knox mentioned using Sony A7RVs until recently, when he started shooting with the Fujifilm GFX100 II.

Almost all of Knox’s work is in black and white. The rare exception was this image with the red background. I snapped this picture at the end of the talk with the striking image in the background as he engaged with a participant, framing it at a 71mm equivalent with a Leica D-Lux 8.

Here’s Knox Kronenberg’s website.
