Service Department, Precision Camera – Austin, Texas

I made one more picture at Precision Camera after the Knox Kronenberg talk I mentioned yesterday. I was at a 68mm equivalent as I framed this picture outside the lecture room I had just exited.

I know that department well, as I’ve sold a good chunk of gear to them recently. I’ve reduced my underutilized gear, freeing up space in my cabinet for something new. The sales also help fund a new Sony camera, the A7C II, and new Sony lenses. The net effect is an overall reduction in gear since it took selling lots of lenses to buy the new stuff, which is more expensive.

The used trade-in prices from Precision Camera are not quite as good as those from KEH.com, but they are so much more convenient. I just deducted the used gear credit from the sales price, which also reduced sales tax.

The cost of my current camera I’m testing, the Leica D-Lux 8, wasn’t offset via old equipment sales. I purchased it directly from the Leica Store in New York. Using a reasonably fast 1/60-second shutter produced an ISO 1600 picture of the service department. With the comparably small sensor, some noise creeps in at this ISO level. It’s nothing too bad if you don’t have to raise the shadows.
