The Power of a Telephoto Zoom

Reflecting Pond – Mountain Village, Colorado

How would you like to wake up to this view? I shot this while driving out of the Mountain Village subdivision where I was staying. I had to stop my car to take this shot as I approached the entrance. A stone wall by the stand of trees demarcates the entry point.

I’m far from an expert in landscapes. Still, I know enough that a telephoto zoom can be very useful—landscapes aren’t just about wide-angle photography. I made the first picture with the Fuji 55-200mm telephoto on a Fuji X-E3. I shot it at the shortest setting of 55mm, which perfectly framed the view and the reflections.

I also shot the same scene with the Fujifilm GFX 50R, a 50-megapixel camera. Coupled with a 40mm equivalent, this is the standard view a person would see. The first picture is a more powerful composition with no ambiguity of the subject.

I cropped the second photo to match the composition of the first. However, I was left with a paltry 10MP image—too limiting these days for my tastes. By contrast, I had a full 24MP from my APS-C Fuji X-E3. This visually shows that a more modest camera with an able telephoto can work better than a fancy high-resolution camera at a lower price and more compact form factor.

Also, notice the color difference. The GFX has more magenta tones, showing the vaulted Fuji colors are not all the same.
