S-Curve – Colorado

Issue 72 of my fabulous photography magazine is hot off the digital presses (via email). I announced a significant life change and used it to justify my most expensive camera purchase, part 2 travel coverage from a beautiful southern city, why standard portraits are boring, and breaking free of expected norms. For the last photo from my 2021 Colorado trip, I feature a nice-looking s-curve, something I found between Telluride and Montrose. An s-curve is like a leading line with some grace and character. It leads the eye through the frame and makes it zig-zag to better appreciate the landscape. Did it work?

I used the same framing technique yesterday. I zoomed into a particular scene I posted two days ago with the Fuji GFX 50R. That camera only had a 40mm equivalent lens. Switching to the Fuji X-E3 with a long zoom, I framed this scene at a 111mm equivalent, allowing me to isolate the most interesting part of the road.

For a person who rarely shoots landscapes, I am happy with my results from that trip four years ago. Since then, I’ve only dabbled with landscapes and haven’t learned any new tricks. However, one important lesson I learned is the benefit of a long zoom. The Fujifilm 55-200 was invaluable for isolating details. Using a telephoto for landscapes is a must-have optic.
