Several days ago, I showed you black-and-white images from the River Walk in the morning. For some visual drama at night, I have a color photograph from a restaurant along the river. The Republic of Texas restaurant’s awnings have a patriotic Texas motif. Another restaurant further down has standard umbrellas that don’t look nearly as festive.
I adapted the Canon 35mm f2 IS lens to the Fujifilm GFX 50R to improve my hand-held night photography. The f2 lens has a bigger aperture that helps. However, I was counting on the in-lens image stabilization to really add dramatic low-light capabilities. Unfortunately, this didn’t work as well as I hoped.
Back in June 2021, I posted this picture from downtown Austin. I was excited to test out this new GFX-Canon combo. I achieved a sharp 1/8th shutter speed, but as discovered, this was a rare occurrence and hard to replicate reliably. I would get movement along the edges with many of my slower exposures. I found for consistent reliability, I needed a 1/30th shutter speed. Thus, I needed ISO 1600 for this River Walk scene in San Antonio. It’s not great, but luckily, the GFX 50S has strong high-ISO image quality.
