Aztec Neon - San Antonio, Texas

Aztec Neon – San Antonio, Texas

The downtown Walgreens from two days ago wasn’t the only neon find in San Antonio. The Aztec theater also sported impressive neon signage. I shot this from North St. Mary’s Street looking south.

The Aztec was erected in 1926 and is part of the theater district in downtown San Antonio. The theater gradually declined through the 1970s and closed its doors in 1989. Ownership changed several times, and it is now used as a concert, comedy show, and live events venue.

Pictured here is the street entrance to the Aztec, and there is also a River Walk entrance on the other side below this grade. While larger than Austin’s Paramount Theater, architecturally, I don’t think the Aztec is as attractive. To me, it looks like an old office building with a theater grafted on the base.
