Grand Staircase, Iolani Palace – Honolulu, Hawaii

I had an opportunity to tour the interior of the Iolani Palace in Honolulu, the home of the only monarchy in the United States. This was my third visit over many years. It gets better each time, with more authentic period decorations being returned to the palace, giving it that lived-in look. As I recall, back over thirty years ago, on my first visit, the building was an empty shell.

While I shot nearly every room with my Fujifilm GFX and fisheye combo, architecturally and photographically, the most impressive structure was the grand staircase. I may feature the other rooms someday, but I’ll show you the fisheye-enhanced staircase for now. For this first picture, I’m on the second floor looking down. Further distorting the curved design was an obvious choice with the fisheye.

In this second picture, I’m on the first floor near the main entrance, tipped up slightly towards the second floor. This view has a well-decorated grand view of the entry, while the first picture is one of geometric perfection.
