The uniquely modern Hawaii State Capitol, opened in 1969, is located directly behind the Iolani Palace. The architecture is an adapted Bauhaus design called Hawaiian International architecture. I asked ChatGPT about modern capital buildings in the United States. After looking at each of them, I found that Hawaii won my award for the most modern design. New Mexico, North Dakota, and Louisiana also sport modernist styles.
Directly out front is a statue of Father Damien, a Belgian Catholic also known as Damien of Molokai. He cared for leprosy patients on Moloka’i from 1873 until he died in 1889.
I framed the picture so that the sun would be at the edge of the building, creating a dramatic flared look. The walls on either side appear to be hiding construction, possibly to maintain the reflecting pools surrounding the building.
