Ali’iolani Hale Fisheye – Honolulu, Hawaii

There are three notable historic structures, among others, in this part of downtown Honolulu—the Iolani Palace, the state capitol, and this building, the Ali’iolani Hale. The Ali’iolani Hale is the home of Hawaii’s Supreme Court and also a Judiciary Museum. It is also famous for the statue of Kamehameha the Great.

I featured this building in a post in March 2022 and talked a bit more about its history. I’m showing it again because this fisheye picture is so very different from the pictures in that previous post. After a few weeks of fisheye photographs, conventional pictures look somewhat dull. They seem almost flat and don’t possess the drama of these fisheye photos. On the other hand, people can rightly call these pictures gimmicky.

I had a wide enough view to include the entire lawn and building. However, because wide angles add distance to the subject, the building and the famous statue look too far away. My preferred composition would have been directly in front of the statue, up close. However, a sign said to keep off the grass, which I followed dutifully.
