Across the street from the Iolani Place, we have this ornate structure. Ali’iolani Hale is home to the Hawaii State Supreme Court. It’s also the former seat of government for the Kingdom of Hawaii before it became part of the United States.
Completed in 1874 under the reign of King David Kalakaua, it was criticized for its extravagance. Some suggested that it should be converted into a palace as originally designed. Fans of the Hawaii Five-O TV Show remake might recognize this building as their headquarters.
The famous Kamehameha I statue is located in front of the Ali’iolani Hale. He was the founder and first ruler of the Kingdom of Hawaii, reigning from 1782 to 1819.
