I used my Sony A7C for most of my posts from Singapore, and it was only the last few where I used the Fujifilm GFX when I was out at night with a tripod. The Sony is considerably smaller and was more than good enough to produce high-quality images. However, I wanted to know how good the medium format Fujifilm GFX might be.
Believe it or not, I brought the Fuji GFX to make this particular picture of the downtown Singapore skyline. Several years before, I shot this picture with the Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II. I like the perspective, but wasn’t thrilled with the image quality. Part of it was due to the lens, which has a convenient travel zoom, but, as I discovered, it doesn’t have the highest quality. Also, the smaller Micro 4/3 sensor was a factor.
As you can see, the photograph came out great. And, my color processing has improved as well. But, how much better is the medium format Fuji compared to a full-frame Sony? I wanted to find out.
I shot and post-processed both images to have a similar perspective. The colors are somewhat different. What you can’t appreciate is the differences in resolution and sharpness unless you see the originals on my 5K 27″ monitor. However, at these web sizes, both pictures look great and are considerably better than the Olympus. I suspect that the Olympus would also do better with a more capable lens and an improved technique on my part.
The bottom line, however, is that for most things, the full-frame Sony is more than good enough. There are subtle quality improvements with the Fujifilm, but not enough to matter.
