I discovered a free streetcar in Tampa, perfect for a first-time tourist exploring the city. While called the TECO streetcar, named after the Tampa Electric Company, which sponsors the line, it’s run by HART, the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority.
This is a newly revived line, which began operating in 2002 as a heritage streetcar line. The original system started in 1885 and ceased operations in 1946.
I boarded the streetcar at the first stop in downtown and rode it nearly to the end into a historic quarter called Ybor City. That ride took about 30 minutes, and the entire system has 11 stops.
