I began covering Ybor City, the historic neighborhood in northeast Tampa, with chickens, believe it or not. I noticed several groups of chickens walking on the street. Today, I showcase some of the architecture.
Founded in the late 1880s by Vicente Martinez-Ybor, a Spanish cigar manufacturer, at its height, over 200 cigar factories produced hundreds of millions of hand-rolled cigars annually. Even today, you see some signs of its cigar-making past.
Modern-day Ybor is an entertainment district. However, on a Thursday afternoon, the area was completely deserted. I enjoyed the historic architecture, documented with some pictures. I walked a half-dozen blocks on the two large streets. The building appeared to be well-maintained, and the streets were clean, unlike Austin’s East 6th Street, which has seen better days.
I love the palm trees, which add a unique element to the neighborhood. I always associate palm trees with vacations and holidays, so I get a positive feeling when I see them.
