There is so much texture in Old Havana, and the visual opportunities were endless. I liked this scene where the Cuban flag is set against a healthy mix of street details.
Internet research revealed the flag is known as Estrella Solitaria, “Lone Star” Flag, which I found fascinating since that’s what we call the Texas flag here in Austin. There’s a noticeable difference in the flag’s designs; however, they share the single white star as a defining element.
I shot this at 70mm, and we see the compression of the architectural elements, the flag, and the Capitol, which is peaking in the background. I love the worn architecture, the cobblestone, and the leftover water from the recent rain. There are enough elements to make a wonderfully rich urban landscape even during the daytime, which is rare.
