Kamy and Architecture - Havana, Cuba

Kamy and Architecture – Havana, Cuba

Over the last three posts, you’ve seen all the models. In this post, I wanted to feature all the models in the context of architecture. The impressive old-world architecture of this high-end restaurant in Havana, Cuba.

All but the last portraits show the entire body, which is uncommon for me. I tend to frame my portraits from the waist up or even closer. However, showing the architectural context naturally pushes me towards a wider view. You can achieve this in two ways. I can use a wider focal length; 24mm was the widest I could go, and the second and third pictures were shot at the widest available.

The first picture of Kamy, while showing the entire body, was not shot at a wide angle. It was at 40mm, and I stepped far enough back to include her and the environment.

Obviously, these two pictures are from the same room, the second floor of this building. The ornate sweep of the stairs was so glorious, I wanted to include it in the background of the portraits.

As with my other portraits over the last three days, these were made in available light, except for this second picture of Kamy. There was a supplemental LED aimed at her face, giving it a subtle pop of brightness. It’s most evident by the shadow behind her head.

This final picture of Claudia shows architecture differently, framing her through the details rather than surrounding her. Though if you think three-dimensionally, instead of being surrounded on her left and right, the architecture is presented in front and behind her.
