I shot this picture not just because of the couple, but also because of how they pop from the colorful background. And, as you can see, it’s how the colorful background is created that really interests me.
You don’t often see vehicles with saturated primary colors in the U.S. Here we have four in various configurations.
Until this trip to Cuba, I didn’t have experience using a 24-70mm f/2.8 zoom. I bought this lens just before the trip. I now understand why it’s the primary lens for photo professionals. It offers a great focal length range, and, equally important. This constant f/2.8 aperture creates decent background separation on a full-frame camera. With a f/1.4 or f/2.0 prime, I’m often tempted to shoot it wide open, which really softens the background. Sometimes, too much. Here, the vehicles are an essential part of the image, but offer the perfect amount of separation from the couple.
